First Love Again ELU 18th May 2010

My first love held my heart
In his hand as if it were a fledgling,
Fallen from a broken nest in an
Old tree. The nest,
And the great fates, created
For my birth a drama; and
I fell to earth not yet fully formed.

My downy feathers barely protected
My soft skin, until you cupped
Your hands around my beating body.
But ignorance, confused memories
Of past and future, hopes and dreams,
Heroism and martyrdom in lives gone
Bye held me too. I lost you.

Does time deaden the pain?
In an unexpected moment,
I remember, and tears fill my heart.
His breath is everywhere,
Meeting me around each corner,
Wafting low over the hazy horizon
Penetrating my mind, my
Memory; until I turn to face you.

You remind me of the gifts,
My first love gave: the protection
His hands offered, the sense of belonging,
And the certainty. All mine,
Accepted unquestioningly –
Like you in me.

Then, your Eternal presence,
Strokes my face. I feel
My gift to myself. My innocence,
My joy and my optimism rise
Like steam from
A tropical rainstorm. Warm, fat
Raindrops wash me clean and new,
To welcome my first love again-
You, and me.
