Bliss

Here’s a small extract that comes from a talk I gave in 1998, to The Medical and Scientific Network in London. I have been thinking about bliss recently, and about joy:

Bliss is something else. It can be connected to an other worldly situation.Let me explain. I’m always very careful about the progress of the spiritual because what I’ve observed is that when people are called by it, they can’t say no. One way or another when it calls, eventually, you come. And, you come, to whatever is the appropriate degree, that constitutes what I call the journey out. You go out to meet it – eventually. It calls and you go. When you reach the embrace with the spirit in some form or another – there is bliss, wonderful. It’s marvellous. But, you have to come back. You have to bring what you have gained in that embrace back to earth; and that often feels as if it’s giving up bliss. And it would be, surely for some people, or for many of us. You feel, why can’t I stay up there? Why can’t I stay blissed out, out there? And the fact is, you can’t because you are on earth, and you have an ordinary everyday human life to live, and that spiritual knowledge out there is of no use unless you reintegrate it into an everyday reality. And that often means giving up the blissed out aspect and its hard to do. Joy is what you gain instead. It is worth it.
