The Fledgling
My heart is like a fledgling
Bird, sheltering in my hand.
Each pulse-beat transmits
A new message, received
By every nerve:
Alive and almost overwhelmed.
My feathers are glued
To my fragile skin, and
Pieces of the shell
Of my old life
That nurtured and protected
Me still stick,
Here and there.
Cradled by the warmth
Of my palm, your palm,
My fledgling soul will
Soon preen those
Damp feathers till
They surround me like
A downy halo, and carefully
Detach the fragments
Of the shell that once
Enclosed me.
My fledgling and I move
Together now, jerkily,
Preparing for the time
When you will raise
Your hands to release us,
To join the sky.
Then, we will fly
To be with you.
Go well, be well.
May peace and joy be yours in the month ahead.
